This is a man who has unconsciously given so much to the music of Klimt 1918. This is a man who has inspired millions of people, has made them dream, taught them what “freedom” means.

Goodbye Alberto, you’ll never know, but an Italian band has thought about you (and about your friend Ernesto) when it wrote his song called “Comandante”. It will be released soon and maybe someone else (apart from us), listening to it, will think of you while you traveled along South America with your old Norton.

Adiós compañero! ¡Buen viaje!

Questo è un uomo che ha inconsapevolmente dato tanto alla musica dei Klimt 1918. Questo è un uomo che ha ispirato milioni di persone, le ha fatte sognare, ha insegnato loro cosa significhi la parola “libertà”.

Addio Alberto, non lo saprai mai, ma una band italiana ha pensato a te (e al tuo amico Ernesto) quando scriveva la sua canzone intitolata “Comandante”. Uscirà presto questa canzone e magari qualcun’altro, oltre noi, ascoltandola, penserà a voi due mentre attraversavate il Sud America con la vostra vecchia Norton.

Afternoon rehearshal times at Francesco’s home: a Fender Jaguar, a Fender Stratocaster, various pedals, a trigger capo, three songs to be arranged, some titles missed, some titles matched (one for all: “Unemployed & Dreamrunner”), old 90’s shoegaze improvisations, fuzz, wires, Davide lying on the bed, keeping us company & telling stories about Mexico, decaffeinated tea, a light beam, the unpredictable heat of March, big clouds in the sky, a microphone, songs sung in invented english, recordings, the curiosity that grows , the passion that sets the fire to our hands, friendship, hours, minutes, seconds, reverb, the desire to finish ( or to never end).

Prove pomeridiane a casa di Francesco: una Fender Jaguar, una Fender Stratocaster, pedali vari, un blocca-corde, tre canzoni da arrangiare, titoli da trovare, titoli trovati (uno su tutti: “Unemployed & Dreamrunner), improvvisazioni di vecchio shoegaze anni ‘90, fuzz, cavi, Davide a tenerci compagnia sdraiato sul letto, racconti sul Messico, tè deteinato, la luce traversa, il caldo imprevedibile di marzo, nuvole molto grosse nel cielo, un microfono, canzoni cantate in inglese inventato, registrazioni, la curiosità che cresce, la passione che infuoca le mani, l’amicizia, le ore, i minuti, gli attimi, il riverbero, la voglia di finire (non finire mai).

How will be called the forthcoming Klimt 1918’s album?

For months, I am haunted by “The Sentimentale Jugend”, or “Die Sentimentale Jugend”. This is a clear reference to the homonymous band formed in 1981 by Einstürzende Neubauten’s Alexander Hacke and Christiane Vera Felscherinow a.k.a. Christiane F. author of the book “Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo”. This is not a musical tribute but rather a language infatuation (Sentimentale Jungend played cacophonous noise). I’m in love with the cold atmospheres described in the Felscherinow’s novel. I thought long of Berlin, I thought the memories that tie me to this city. There is enough material to write a concept album.

For now, I wrote these words in huge letters on my Moleskine notebook: Sentimentale Jugend. The images flow from the words. The notes come with the remembrance.

It will be a cold and solemn album, like a winter walk along the icy Karl Marx Strasse.

Come si intitolerà il nuovo album dei Klimt 1918?

Da mesi sono ossessionato da “The Sentimentale Jugend”, o anche “Die Sentimentale Jugend”. Si tratta di un chiaro riferimento all’omonima band formata nel 1981 da Alexander Hacke degli Einstürzende Neubauten e da Christiane Vera Felscherinow meglio nota con lo pseudonimo di Christiane F. autrice del libro “Noi, ragazzi dello zoo di Berlino”.

Non si tratta di un tributo musicale o stilistico (i Sentimentale Jugend suonavano noise rumoristico piuttosto cacofonico), ma semplicemente linguistico. Mi sono innamorato delle atmosfere fredde descritte nel libro della Felscherinow. Ho pensato a lungo a Berlino, ai ricordi che mi legano a questa città. C’è abbastanza materiale per scrivere un concept album.

Per ora ho scritto a caratteri cubitali queste due parole sulla mia Moleskine: Sentimentale Jugend. Le immagini scaturiscono dalle parole. Le note accompagnano la rimembranza.

Sarà un album freddo e solenne, come una passeggiata invernale lungo la gelida Karl Marx Strasse.

“He who saw the deep” is a brackish album. It looks like one of those big shells resting on the ears when you want to hear the sound of the sea. I’m saying these things not because of the cover or the (beautiful) Father’s Son video clip .ILiKETRAiNS’s music has always had something abysmal. We loved to death their debut album because it was “deep, majestic and dangerous” as the stormy sea. Now that they are aware of being “oceanic and immense” everything seems clearer. “He who saw the deep” is an undertow opus. It’s minimal and thin like a beach devastated by the storm. Less monumental compared to the dazzling debut album “Elegies to lessons lernt” and to the beautiful ep “Progress Reform”. It’s raw, more “wave oriented “. Less shoegaze, more guitar-concreteness. But the magic remains intact. Imagine being a body shipwrecked on the beach.Your arms are broken by the fury of the sea, your boat sank and the only thing you are able to distinguish is the lighthouse perched on the rocks. The cold has taken possession of you, but the joy of surviving the storm is huge.

E’ un disco salmastro “He who Saw the Deep”. E’ come una di quelle grandi conchiglie che appoggiamo sulle orecchie per sentire il mare. Non dico questo a causa della copertina o del (bellissimo) video di Father’s Son. La musica degli Iliketrains ha sempre avuto qualcosa di abissale. Abbiamo amato alla follia il loro album di debutto perchè era “profondo, maestoso e pericoloso” come il mare in tempesta. Ora che anche loro si sono accorti di essere “oceanici ed immensi”, è come se tutto fosse più chiaro. Un album di risacca, “He who saw the deep”, minimale e scavato come la spiaggia sconvolta dalla tempesta. Meno monumentale rispetto al folgorante esordio “Elegies to lessons lernt e al bellissimo ep “Progress Reform”. Crudo, più “wave oriented”. Meno shoegaze, più concretezza chitarristica. Ma la magia resta intatta.

Immaginate di essere voi il corpo naufragato sulla spiaggia. Avete le braccia spezzate dalla furia del mare, la vostra barca è affondata e l’unica cosa che riuscite a distinguere è la luce di un faro arroccato sugli scogli. Il freddo si è impossessato di voi; ma la gioia di essere sopravvissuti alla mareggiata è immensa.

Three new songs ready! We have three titles, perhaps temporary: “Nostalghia”, “Juvenile” (formerly known as “April Endless Bereavement”) and “Comandante” (it had to be published on “Dopoguerra, instead of “Sleepwalk in Rome”). We continue to work hard in the rehearsal room, despite the cold and damp.

Tre nuove canzoni pronte. Abbiamo tre titoli, forse provvisori: Nostalghia, Juvenile (anticamente conosciuta come April Endless Bereavement) e Comandante (doveva essere pubblicata su Dopoguerra, al posto di Sleepwalk in Rome). Continuiamo a lavorare sodo in sala prove, nonostante il freddo e l’umidità.

Emptied of the famous icon created by Alberto Korda, Che Guevara’s silhouette is disturbing and fashinating. Guevara became a black hole, an historical vacuum. As Clifflord D. Simak would say: “Someone who now has none. Today is just an idea. A CHALLENGE. Something that makes you think and makes you ask questions”.

Inquietante/affasciante la sagoma del Che svuotata della celebre immagine/icona creata da Alberto Korda. Guevara diventa un buco nero, un vuoto storico. Come direbbe Clifford D. Simak “Qualcuno che adesso e’ nessuno. Oggi e’ soltanto un’idea. UNA SFIDA. Qualcosa che ti fa riflettere, qualcosa che ti fa pensare e ti fa porre delle domande”.

Witch House, Ethereal Wave, goth hip hop, Drag. Hanno descritto la musica dei Salem in molti modi diversi. Per quanto mi riguarda sono la band del momento. Non c’è nient’altro d’aggiungere a parte forse che il loro suono è quanto di più ipnotico e lisergico si possa trovare in giro adesso e le atmosfere del loro bellissimo esordio “King Night” mi ricordano quelle di “In un milione di piccoli pezzi” di James Fray, non a caso un libro dedicato alla tossicodipendenza (in particolar modo quella da crack di cui i tre membri John Holland, Heather Marlatt, and Jack Donoghue sembrano essere assidui consumatori). Essendo io straight edge dovrei moralmente aborrire gente che intitola il loro primo EP Yes, I smoke crack. Ma la musica dei Salem travalica ogni dogma e fluisce nel corpo e nella mente come una pera di eroina tagliata male che qualcuno ti ha iniettato contro la tua volontà ( mi viene in mente la scena di “Il braccio violento della legge” di Friedkin in cui Gene Hackman/Jimmy Doyle viene catturato e trasformato in un tossico dai suoi sequestratori).

Da ascoltare ripetutamente, ovviamente da sobri.

There is nothing else to add except that their sound is as hypnotic and lysergic acid that can be found around right now.The atmosphere of their beautiful debut “King Night” reminds me “In a million of little pieces” by James Fray, not by chance a novel on drug abuse (especially crack abuse. Salem’s John Holland, Heather Marlatt, and Jack Donoghue seem to be frequent consumers of crack). As I am straight edge, I should morally abhor people who called their first EP “Yes, I smoke crack”. But Salem’s music goes beyond any dogma flowing in vains as a dose of bad heroin that someone has injected against your will (I am reminded of the scene from Friedkin’s “The Franch Connection” when Gene Hackman / Jimmy Doyle is captured and converted into a toxic by his captors).

To listen to repeatedly, obviously when sober.

Ecco i dischi che ho ascoltato di più durante il 2010. Ovviamente, gli album citati non sono usciti tutti quest’anno.

Here are the album I listened more during 2010. Of Course, the mentioned records aren’t all released this year.

1)High Violet - The National

Un disco di grandi spazi vuoti, di sere solitarie. Malinconico e metropolitano. Sorrow è una delle canzoni più belle che mi sia capitato di ascoltare fin’ora.

This album is made of large empty spaces and lonely nights. It’s melancholic and metropolitan. “Sorrow” is one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard so far.

2)Goodbye - Ulrich Schnauss

Liquido ed etereo. Un album da ascoltare in macchina, in assoluta solitudine.

Fluid and ethereal. You have to listen this album in the car, driving in absolute solitude.

3)Crystal Castles - Crystal Castles

Estivo e gelido allo stesso tempo. Non bello, non poetico e poco incline al romanticismo. La cover di Not in Love dei Platinum Blonde dà dipendenza.

Summer and cold at the same time. Not nice, not poetic and not inclined to romance. The cover of Platinum Girl’s “Not in love” is addictive.

4)It all falls apart - The Sight Below

Drone/shoegaze torrenziale e cosmico. E’ un viaggio interstellare, una nube pulviscolare di suoni riverberati. Hanno registrato la più bella cover di “New Dawn Fades” di sempre.

Torrential and cosmic drone/shoegazing music. It’s an interstellar travel, a dusty cloud of reverb sounds. They recorded the best cover of Joy Division’s “New Dawn fades” ever.

5)A place to bury strangers - A place to bury strangers

Un missile nucleare a propulsione shoegaze/post punk. Violenti e sentimentali. Sporchi come gli ingranaggi di una macchina inarrestabile. Sono i Jesus & Mary Chain del terzo millennio.

A nuclear missile powered by shoegazing-post punk! Violent and sentimental. Soiled as the gears of an unstoppable machine. They are the Jesus & Mary Chain of the third millennium

6)Exploiding head - A place to bury strangers

Più garage e dance dell’esordio, ma ugualmente degno di nota.

More garage and dance than their debut album, but equally noteworthy.

7)The technicolour sleep - The American Dollar

Un altro album per contemplare spazi estesi e possibilmente desertici. L’America me la immagino così, desolata, affascinante e misteriosa come la musica degli AD

Another album to admire wide & (possibly) desert spaces. This is the way I imagine America: desolate, mysterious and fascinating as AD music.

8)Fortuna - Fine before you came

Cosa posso dire di più su questa meravigliosa realtà italiana? Fortuna ti entra dentro come uno stiletto avvelenato e ti contagia per sempre.

What more can I say about this wonderful italian act? Fortuna gets inside you like a poisoned dagger and infects you forever.

9)You who pretend to sleep - Joy wants eternity

Post rock cinematico e atmosferico. Musica letargica impreziosita da esplosioni di violenza elettrica che lasciano senza parole.

Cinematic and atmospheric post rock. Lethargic music enhanced by electrical explosion of violence that leave you speechless.

10) Inception O.S.T. - Hans Zimmer

Grande film, grandissima colonna sonora.”Time”, ti entra nel cervello. Epico, doloroso, oscuro.

Great film, awful soundtrack. “Time” gets into your brain. Epic, painful, obscure.

Quanti anni sono passati dall’ultimo post su “Secession Spirits”? Tanti, troppi. E’ arrivato il momento di dare continuità a quell’esperienza con un nuovo blog.

Stiamo lavorando in sala prove. Abbiamo tre brani pronti. Tre nuovi pezzi che faranno parte del nuovo album dei Klimt 1918. E’ un processo lento ed emozionante. Un parto che dura da settimane. Le sensazioni sono quelle di sempre: fascino, paura di sbagliare, curiosità, necessità di cambiare. Siamo in bilico per la quarta volta. Fluttuiamo come la modella di questa splendida foto di Federico Erra inserita nel booklet di “Just in case”. Comporre musica in fondo significa questo: chiudere gli occhi e lasciarsi andare.

E’ tempo di rimboccarsi le maniche!

How many years have passed since the last post was written on “Secession Spirits”? Too many. It’s time to give continuity to that experience with a new blog.

We are working hard in our rehearshal room. We have three songs ready. Three brand new tracks that will be part of our new album. It’s a slow and exciting process. A match that lasts for weeks. The feelings are the same as ever: fascination, fear of making mistakes, curiosity, need to change. We are poised for the fourth time. We float as the model of Federico Erra’s photo. Composing music means this: closing your eyes and letting go.

It’s time to roll up our sleeves!
